The harmonica as we know it today was invented in 1847 by the Seydel Music Company in Klingenthal, Germany. For the next 100 years the company enjoyed a wonderful reputation for creating and building harmonicas and putting the ability to play a musical instrument into the hands of almost everyone.
Then in 1945, after World War II ended, the USSR was given a section of Berlin, Germany and the Berlin Wall was erected trapping Seydel behind it for the next 45 years. Behind the Wall, Seydel struggled to exist.
Once the Wall was torn down in 1990, Seydel began to emerge again as the world leader in designing and manufacturing harmonicas. Some of the best harps in the world are now available from Seydel.
Throughout this site you will see the word "harp" used instead of harmonica. "Harp" is a slang term for harmonica or what some people called mouth organ or mouth harp. Most players and music buffs fondly refer to the harmonica as a harp.
